A roughness measurement using contact stylus instruments involves moving a stylus tip made from diamond over the surface of a workpiece at a constant speed. The measurement profile is derived from the vertical position shift of the stylus tip, which is usually recorded by a distance measurement system. When a surface is described using metrology, standardized roughness parameters are obtained from the measurement profile.
